SAN JUAN City – Mapua Institute of Technology broke into the win column with an amazing 104-94 demolition of defending NCAA champion Colegio de San Juan de Letran in continuing action from the 2016 FilOil Flying V Premier Cup Saturday (May 14) at the San Juan Arena. Both teams ended up in a three-way logjam for third to fifth places in Group B with 1-1 win-loss cards with idle Ateneo de Manila University.
The Cardinals tried to settle the score early as guard Exeqiel Biteng waxed hot for five triples in the first half to push them ahead, 57-45. The Knights never knew what hit them as they never got to taste the lead or at least deadlock the count for the entire contest.
The best that the Knights could muster was to trim their deficit to seven markers in the third period, 62-69. That did not rattle the Cardinals as they managed to stretch their advantage to as high as 16 points in the fourth period, 99-83.
CJ Isit led all scorers with 23 points to go with six rebounds and seven assists. Biteng added one more triple in the second half to up his total to 18 points, all from the beyond the three-point arc while NCAA Most Valuable Player Allwell Oraeme finished with 16 points, 18 rebounds and six blocks.
“We love to run because after Allwell, we are a small team,” said Coach Atoy Co. “It will boil down to the players’ conditioning; they have to be in shape to follow our system.”
Rey Nambatac paced Letran with 20 points and six rebounds followed by Bong Quinto with 14 points and eight rebounds. While Coach Co liked how his team shot the ball today, he observed that Letran ran with them hence they were able to score 94 points.
Earlier, Malayan High School of Science made it a double celebration by crushing the debuting Immaculate Conception Academy-EAC Brigadiers, 101-73. The Red Robins upped their card to 1-1 in Group A.
