MARIKINA CITY – Biyaheng SCTEX opened the playoffs of the 2016 Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Chairman’s Cup with a pulsating 77-72 overtime escape over Santa Lucia Realty last Friday (May 6) at the Marikina Sports Center. The third seed Road Warriors needed to rally from as much as 19 points down to force the extension and take a 1-0 lead in the best-of-three quarterfinal series.
Despite their good start, SCTEX hit a roadblock after they could only cough up eight markers in the second period. That was the cue for the sixth seed Realtors to take advantage with Jam Jamito, Jerald Bautista and Ivan Camasura taking turns at finding the hoop to give Santa Lucia a 38-28 edge at halftime.
Coach Adonis Tierra then fired up his players by reminding them that a loss against an all-Filipino team will be a big embarrassment on their part. He then appealed to the players to play with more energy so that the coaching can see and feel the energy coming out of their bodies.
In a strange twist, the shot clock malfunctioned with 2:39 left in regulation, prompting an over 15-minute delay and Santa Lucia nursing a 60-58 advantage. Raul Soyud, who sat out the Road Warriors’ last game due to a suspension, was blazing the entire second half as he atoned for his scoreless first half with 14 points, including the basket that tied the count at 62-62 at the end of regulation capping a mad rally that also drew eight points from Alfred Batino.
Soyud continued his hot play in the overtime adding five more points for a grand total of 19 points and 17 rebounds. Byron Villarias matched Soyud’s output with 19 points as well, four coming in the overtime.
“The long break worked to our advantage because we got to rest,” observed Coach Tierra. “It was a big mistake to fall behind by 19 points but I admire the players for refusing to quit and play for pride.”
Jamito paced Santa Lucia with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Camasura and Bautista backed him up with 12 points apiece.
For the second game in a row, the Realtors failed to field an import. However, help in on the way as Landry Sanjo, their import for their first three games before being relegated to the injured list, is expected to be medically cleared in time for Game Two on Sunday (May 8) at the same venue starting at 7:00 PM.
