Mighty Sports Sweep Round One

2016 PCBL Chairman's Cup     MARIKINA CITY – Kiefer Ravena got the better of the match up with his uncle Byron Villarias as Mighty Sports clipped Biyaheng SCTEX, 74-70, and sweep the first round of the eliminations of the 2016 Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Chairman’s Cup Friday (April 8) at the Marikina Sports Center.  Later on, Foton Toplander opened second round hostilities with an 87-82 drubbing of Jumbo Plastic.

Still, Ravena needed the help of his teammates to pull off the feat beginning with Allan Mangahas scoring to put Mighty on top with 1:36 to play, 71-70.  After a Pamboy Raymundo missed drive, the ball went to Ravena who was quickly fouled and made both free throws at the 20-second mark, 73-70.

Finally, Mangahas sealed the victory by stealing ball and giving it to Ravena who eventually fed a running John Lopez who was hammered on the way to the hoop.  Lopez split his charities for the final count with only six ticks remaining.

“This game was a true acid test for us,” declared Coach Mike Fermin.  “The win today also gives us a good preparation for the second round.”

The “family feud” between Ravena and Villarias was best shown in the fourth period as they torridly exchanged shots and at times defended each other.  In the end, the nephew got the better numbers of 19 points and five assists compared to Uncle Byron’s 17 points and five rebounds with both of them logging 34 minutes on the floor.

Mighty also drew good numbers from Bright Akhuetie with 16 points and 15 rebounds and Mangahas with 11 points, five assists and three steals.  Mark Pangilian fired four triples for 12 points and Raymundo added 11 points and six rebounds as the Road Warriors slumped to their second straight setback after a three-game winning streak.

THE STANDINGS

Mighty Sports 6-0
Santa Lucia Realty 4-2
Biyaheng SCTEX 3-3
Jumbo Plastic 3-4
Foton Toplander 3-4
Euro-Med Laboratories 2-4
Supremo Lex-OLFU 1-5

Parading a roster decimated by injuries and illnesses, Foton displayed what Coach Jonathan Reyes described as very indicative of their character.  With Levi Hernandez out for two more weeks due to an aggravated heel injury and Ibrahim Ouattara hampered with tonsillitis, Foton’s woes were compounded after top guard Mikee Reyes left the game for good with a knee injury late in the third period and Ed Rivera sustained a cut on his eyebrow.

Reyes’ departure and Rivera’s temporary sidelining came at the time the Linoleum Giants were beginning to rally from a 21-point third period deficit, 38-59, behind Stephen Siruma, Marcy Arellano and new recruits Christopher Bitoon and Mustafa Arafat at the firing end.  Ineffective in the first three periods, James Martinez and Jeff Alvin Viernes finally found their range to further eat into the Foton lead.

Arafat then split his free throws to put Jumbo at its closest since the opening sequences, 81-85, and 41 ticks to go.  Time however was not on their side as Jerrick Nacpil hit two free throws to help preserve the win in the ensuing play, 87-81.

Nacpil paced Foton with 18 points and six rebounds.  Cedric Ablaza followed with 17 points and eight rebounds for Best Player honors.

Martinez scored 14 of his 18 points in the fourth period.  Arafat had a rousing debut as the replacement of Allwell Oraeme with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The PCBL Chairmans’ Cup second round will continue on Sunday (April 10) at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center.  Euro-Med Laboratories tackles Santa Lucia Realty at 5:00 PM followed by Mighty Sports against Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU at 7:00 PM.
