MALOLOS CITY – Biyaheng SCTEX rolled to their third straight win in the 2016 Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Chairman’s Cup by escaping Jumbo Plastic, 62-60, in continuing action Sunday (April 3) at the Malolos Sports and Convention Center. Equally amazing was Euro-Med Laboratories finally breaking into the win column after four straight defeats by crushing Foton Toplander in the opening game, 93-81.
Falling behind by as much as 15 points in the second period, 10-25, the Road Warriors slowly crept back and showered the Linoleum Giants with a barrage of four triples to begin the fourth period with Byron Villarias hitting two and Mark Pangilinan and Pamboy Raymundo one each. Raul Soyud then scored underneath to deadlock the count followed by another Villarias triple to finally push SCTEX ahead with still four minutes to go, 57-54.
Jeff Alvin Viernes then countered with a triple to tie the score anew, 57-57. Pangilinan quickly answered with a triple followed by a Soyud stab for a 62-57 SCTEX edge entering the final two minutes.
James Martinez launched Jumbo’s last gasp, a triple to threaten at the 46-second mark, 60-62. After a failed SCTEX possession, Jumbo had a chance but Jay-R Taganas missed a triple with still seven ticks on the clock and the Road Warriors dribbled the time away.
“I told the team that it would be an embarrassment if we lost today because Jumbo is playing all-Filipino,” said Coach Adonis Tierra. The Linoleum Giants have played the last two games without an import but will have Mustafa Arafat of the University of the East ready by their next game.
Soyud completed his third double-double in an as many games with 20 points and 15 rebounds. Villarias had three triples for 17 points on top of six rebounds.
Martinez paced Jumbo Plastic with 18 points. Jaymo Eguilos was the only other twin-digit scorer with 16 points, eight made in the fourth period.
Hoping to save their tournament, Euro-Med’s new acquisitions did not disappoint as Eliud Poligrates, Lester Alvarez and Eric Salamat contributed greatly to the victory. Euro-Med scored the last 24 points of the second period starring Poligrates, Ola Adeogun, Alex Almario and Gwyne Capacio to take a 54-23 cushion into the halftime break.
Alvarez then scored the first two baskets of the third period to give Euro-Med their biggest lead of the contest, 58-23. Scrub time set in quite early and despite earning the ire of Coach Yong Garcia for playing loose and relaxed, Euro-Med’s lead never went to single digits.
“We expected the team to come out and play with fire in their eyes today,” said Coach Garcia. “They should not mind the fact that we are winless for as long as they stick to our system, we will be good.”
Poligrates, who was in his native Cebu when the call came, topped Euro-Med with 17 points. Adeogun and Jopher Custodio had double-doubles of 11 points each and 11 and 13 rebounds respectively.
Levi Hernandez was the high scorer for Foton with 18 markers. Mikee Reyes followed wih 14 points and 10 assists as the Toplander skidded to their third straight defeat.
Second running SCTEX will test the mettle of Santa Lucia Realty this Wednesday (April 6) at the Marikina Sports Center. Game time is at 7:00 PM to be preceded by the meeting of tail enders Euro-Med and Supremo Lex-OLFU at 5:00 PM.
