Mighty Sports Now 5-0; Sta. Lucia Prevails

2016 PCBL Chairman's Cup     MARIKINA CITY – No Kiefer Ravena, no problem for Mighty Sports as they streaked to their fifth straight victory in the 2016 Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Chairman’s Cup at the expense of Foton Toplander, 104-89, Friday (April 1) at the Marikina Sports Center. The team showed their depth as five players scored in double figures to make up for their star’s absence.

Mighty used a crippling 17-2 run in the third period that broke the game wide open, 73-60. Foton tried to fight back but their cause was hampered by the early disqualification due to fouls of Ibrahim Ouattara and the sidelining of Marlon Gomez after he rolled his left ankle in a rebound play midway in the final canto.

Sans the two Foton stalwarts, Andrian Celada and Gab Banal combined to give Mighty their biggest lead of the game, 90-73. Bright Akhuetie then punctuated Mighty’s domination with an emphatic slam dunk that settled the final score.

Falling behind by a basket at halftime, 47-49, Coach Mike Fermin reasoned that they fell into a sense of complacency. “During the Holy Week break, we hardly practiced and we have had only four sessions before today’s game.”

Banal was all over the court with a new tournament-high of 22 points to go with nine rebounds and eight assists. Bright was likewise his usual dominant self with 19 points, 19 rebounds and five blocks.

Ravena was in the United States for some personal matters and will be ready for Mighty’s next game on April 6 against Biyaheng SCTEX. He is averaging 16.0 points through Mighty’s first four games.

Levi Hernandez and Cedric Ablaza paced Foton with 18 markers each. Ed Rivera followed with 17 points and seven rebounds as Foton dropped its second straight game for a 2-3 win-loss card.

In the first game, Santa Lucia Realty welcomed the addition of Jam Jamito into the lineup and the Saint Clare College star made an immediate impact with 15 points and five rebounds coming off the bench as the Realtors waylaid Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU, 80-67. Jerald Bautista chipped in 12 and Prince Eze had a double-double of 10 points and 10 rebounds to complete the Realtors’ rise to 3-2.

“Jamito is a workhouse and the frontline fed off his energy,” said Coach Boni Garcia. “He has the potential to make it big with his athleticism and strength.”

The Builders took the first half, 45-38, but the Realtors opened second half hostilities with a 14-0 blitzkrieg from which Supremo Lex never recovered, 52-45. Overall, the Builders could only cough up four markers in the pivotal third period as Santa Lucia began to turn the game into a blowout entering the fourth period, 60-49.

The Builders’ woes continued as they absorbed their fourth consecutive setback after prevailing over Foton in their first assignment. Mark Montuano led the Builders with 21 points and eight rebounds while Hamadou Laminou added 11 points and seven rebounds.

The PCBL will return to Malolos City this Sunday (April 3) for another doubleheader. Biyaheng SCTEX and Jumbo Plastic face off at 5:00 PM followed by Euro-Med Laboratories tangling with Foton at 7:00 PM.
