In their third year, RTU finally gets to taste NAASCU Cheerleading gold.

NAASCU on Facebook     MANILA – Bridesmaids no more! Rizal Technological University ended two years of close runner-up finishes to claim their very first National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Cheerleading Competition title in front of a packed Rizal Memorial Coliseum Friday afternoon (March 11).

The Blue Thunder presented a daring and aggressive routine that almost became their undoing as the judges assessed them a total of 13 deductions. Still, RTU’s fine performance in tumbling, tosses, stunts and pyramid building was well recognized as they amassed a total of 310.0 points, the highest winning score in the last three seasons.

Perennial crowd darling City University of Pasay took Second Place with 295.0 points. Although the Eagle Squad had lesser deductions and matched RTU in most categories, it was their relatively poor tosses that cost them a shot to get back the title they won in four seasons ago.

Defending champion Centro Escolar University went tumbling down but still managed to grab Third Place with 291.0 points. While displaying good basics and minimal deductions, CEU’s cautious and conservative performance paled in comparison to their previous efforts that won them multiple championships.

Season host New Era University returned to the Cheerleading Competition after skipping last season’s edition. All seven rmembers fielded entries including Saint Clare College of Caloocan, Our Lady of Fatima University and Philippine Christian University.

NAASCU Chairman Dr. Ernesto Jay G. Adalem and the NAASCU Board awarded the trophies to the winners. It was also announced that the top three finishers will represent the NAASCU in the coming National Cheerleading Championship scheduled for March 20 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Meanwhile, the NAASCU’s remaining second semester events will be contested from March 15 to 16 at various venues across Metro Manila. Badminton, Table Tennis, Chess and Taekwondo will be at NEU, Swimming at OLFU-Quezon City and Athletics at the Marikina Sports Park.
