Second NAASCU Men’s Volleyball title for RTU in the last three years.

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Rizal Technological University dethroned Centro Escolar University as the champions of the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Men’s Volleyball tournament in four sets, 25-23, 25-17, 19-25 and 25-17 Friday (March 11) at the RTU Gym. The Blue Thunder took the best of three series, 2-1.

“Mission accomplished,” declared Coach George Pascua, who also went home with his second Coach of the Year citation. “It’s very overwhelming compared to the last time we won and we did it in front of our home fans that supported us very well.”

Friday’s win completed a double celebration for the university after their Lady Thunder successfully retained their Women’s Division title over Philippine Merchant Marine School last Wednesday (March 9) at the Centro Escolar Gym in Manila. Overall, RTU has won four of the six Volleyball championships contested since joining the NAASCU three seasons ago.

RTU’s high-leaping Jammenel Campoy spiked and blocked his way to Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors on top of winning the Best Blocker award. RTU President Dr. Jesus Rodrigo F. Torres and Commissioner Andres “Butch” Montinola III presided over the awarding rites that also recognized RTU’s Alnasil Dulahid as Best Setter and Dennes Villatora as Best Libero and CEU’s team captain Mikko Bargamento as Best Server, Robin Clemente as Best Attacker and John Paul Sejalbo as Best Receiver.

Other members of the champion team are team captain Daryll de Vera, Hussin Tanyo, Mark Blancada, Aldren Banaag, Jemmy Entig, Paul Patrocenio, Ronemar Zaragoza, Marvin Alonzo and Jaindr Sulayman. Coach Pascua was assisted by Jukran Hamdan and Carlo Sebastian.

The Blue Thunder’s march to the title was stalled last Wednesday when the Scorpions levelled the series at their home court. Third Place went to the PMMS Mariners.
