NEU Shocks CEU In Five Sets

NAASCU on Facebook     QUEZON CITY – Host New Era University sent shockwaves through the 15th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Men’s Volleyball tournament by downing defending champion Centro Escolar University in five sets Wednesday (February 23) at the NEU Gym. The Hunters of Coach Manny Lagrada took the last two sets to prevail, 24-26, 25-17, 20-25, 25-19 and 15-12.

Eugene Magbitang stepped up in the decider with points off spikes, including a screamer that put the Hunters ahead for good, 12-11. New Era also drew big performances from Jonathan Eugenio and Jhay-R Alfonso as they survived the loss due to injury of team captain Kemuel Encina with the score tied at 9-9.

The Hunters thus moved back into the top four of the standings with an even 2-2 win-loss card. The Scorpions dropped to 1-2 and are just hanging on to the final playoff berth.
