PASIG CITY – Rolando Ruel easily outlasted fellow Davis Cup veteran PJ Tierro to top the Metro Manila qualifying leg of the 2015-2016 Peugeot Philippine Tennis Open last Sunday (February 7) at the Valle Verde Country Club courts. The Men’s Single’s was over in two sets, 6-2 and 6-1.
In the distaff side’s finale, Marian Capadocia got the better of Khim Iglupas in three sets, 6-0, 2-6 and 6-0. Both champions received trophies, PHP 20,000.00 in cash and gifts from Wilson and other tournament sponsors plus coveted slots in the National Finals set for March 14 to 20 at the same venue.
The Nationals will gather all the champions and qualifiers from the legs held since last year in Cagayan de Oro, Bacolod, Cebu, Cabanatuan and Metro Manila. Aside from the bigger cash prizes at stake, the winners will be sent on an all-expense paid trip to watch the world’s best tennis players at the 2016 French Open.
Iglupas did not go home empty handed as her team up with Shaira Hope Rivera produced a championship in the Women’s Doubles over the Capadocia sisters Marian and Jella, 3-6, 6-1 and 6-4. The Men’s Doubles went to National University tennis coaches Karl Santamaria and Ronard Joven who gave youngsters Noel Damian and Davis Alano of San Beda College a neat lesson, 6-4 and 7-5.
Among the champions who are expected to vie in the Nationals with Ruel and Capadocia are Johnny Arcilla, Hannah Grace Espinosa, Alberto Villamor, Edilyn Balanga, Elbert Anasta, Alexie Santos and the brother and sister tandem of Nino and Sally Mae Siso. They will be joined by the runner-ups and selected elite players.
