PMMS Strong NAASCU Debut

NAASCU on Facebook     QUEZON CITY – Philippine Merchant Marine School scored a double victory to against fancied opponents to begin their campaign in the 15th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Volleyball tournaments on a high note Tuesday (February 9) at the New Era University Gym. The Las Pinas City-based school is making their debut as a guest team in the tournament.

The Mariners claimed a big scalp in no less than defending champion Centro Escolar University Scorpions in straight sets, 25-22, 25-14 and 25-20. Before joining the NAASCU, the team of Coach JR Libay has won a good share of other inter-school tournaments.

In the day’s first match, the Lady Mariners of Coach Robert Buenamente made easy work of the AMA University Lady Titans in three sets, 25-13, 25-15 and 25-22. The Lady Titans are making a return to the NAASCU after a championship in Season 11 and a runner-up finish in Season 12.

The Lady Scorpions of Coach Bobby Celso cushioned their male counterparts’ loss by thrashing the Philippine Christian University Lady Dolphins in straight sets, 25-7, 25-11 and 25-6. CEU is returning six players from the team that finished runner-up last season.

Meanwhile, Rizal Technological University grabbed the early lead in the Men’s Division with their second win in as many starts by stopping the Dolphins, 25-9, 25-8 and 25-11. PCU dropped to the bottom of the standings with no wins in two games.

In the day’s final match, defending Women’s Division champion RTU proved too much for host team New Era University. The Lady Thunder emerged the winners after three sets, 25-18, 25-18 and 25-11.

NAASCU Volleyball action resumes on Thursday (February 11), still at NEU. The six-game bill begins at 8:00 AM.
