Bizzare Opening Day

NAASCU on Facebook     MAKATI CITY – Tension and drama surrounded the opening of the 15th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) Volleyball tournaments Friday afternoon (February 5) at the Makati Coliseum. In the end, the scheduled Men’s Division doubleheader was completed albeit with contrasting results.

Guest team AMA University, forced to play shorthanded after starters Paolo Demition and Justin Sarmiento and libero Ralph Joshua Arenas were suddenly barred from playing due to incomplete documents, cruised past Philippine Christian University, 25-9, 25-6 and 25-6.

Titans coach Michael Tobias insisted on fielding the trio but later relented to let the match begin. “I was just defending my players, they just wanted to play,” said Coach Tobias.

In the first game, host New Era University treated their fans to an amazing show of force against a much taller Rizal Technological University in a five-set thriller, 25-19, 24-26, 25-22, 23-25 and 15-12. However, the celebration was short-lived after the match was declared a forfeit because the Hunters failed to submit the needed documents for all but one of their players on time.

The Women’s Division will begin this Tuesday (February 9) with three matches at the NEU Gym in Quezon City starting at 8:00 AM. Two matches in the Men’s Division will complete the schedule.
