SAN JUAN City – College of Saint Benilde is now one game away from doing the unthinkable. The Lady Blazers defeated the top seed San Sebastian College Lady Stags in four intense sets, 25-23, 21-25, 25-22 and 25-16, in the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) Women’s Volleyball Finals Friday (January 22) at the San Juan Arena.
The wards of Coach Macky Carino effectively erased the Lady Stags’ thrice to beat advantage in the series opener two days earlier. The Lady Stags of Coach Roger Gorayeb now face the tough task of sweeping the next two games to avoid a monumental collapse after winning all their nine elimination round games.
The Lady Blazers go for the school’s first ever NCAA Volleyball championship on Tuesday (January 26) at the Arena starting at 4:00 PM. “It’s about time we made history,” declared Coach Carino.
In the Seniors Division, University of Perpetual Help System-Dalta Altas forced a rubber match by halting defending champion Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals in four sets, 20-25, 25-21, 25-20 and 25-19. The decider will be also played be played next Tuesday at the same venue starting at 2:00 PM.
Meanwhile, Perpetual Help retained the Juniors Division championship by sweeping the best-of-three series against Immaculate Conception Academy-Dasmarinas by taking the final two sets in the five-set thriller, 25-21, 22-25, 19-25, 25-16 and 15-11. Darwin Salopaso and team captain and Finals Most Valuable Player Jody Severo starred for the Junior Altas of Coach Sandy Rieta in the clincher with 17 points each.
