The Return of Wang’s

2016 Aspirants Cup     WANG’S BASKETBALL will once again participate in the coming PBA D-League Aspirants Cup with a revamped roster that is bound to spring a few surprises and shockers along the way. The team of long-time basketball patron Alex Wang will continue to adhere to its policy of giving deserving players the much needed breaks in order to realize their basketball dreams.

This marks the third straight Aspirants Cup that the Mandaluyong City-based squad will enter. Coach Pablo Lucas has retained only two players from the 2015 unit in veteran Macky Acosta and center John Allen Montemayor.

Ex-pro Brian Ilad, Rey Publico and Gwyne Capacio have been added to strengthen the frontline position. Meanwhile, D-League veterans Jonathan Banal and Clark Bautista will shore up the backcourt along with shooter Jaycee Asuncion and rookie Francis Munsayac from EAC.

Jemuel Namocatcat also earned a ticket back to the big leagues towing with him TIP Engineers teammate Terence Tumalip. The pair got the scouts’ attention after a solid performance in the last PCCL.

Acosta, Banal and Namocatcat were members of Wang’s first ever team in the 2013-2014 Aspirants Cup that went 4-9. The club has always skipped the Foundation Cup.

Coach Lucas also clarified that Avery Scharer, their first round draft pick and fourth overall selection, has yet to report to practice. The highly- touted 6’2” guard out of Shoreline Community College is reportedly still in the United States.

With or without Scharer, the team vows to be give it their best effort. Assisting Coach Lucas on the bench will be Buboy Rodriguez, Joel Dualan and Rino Magsalin with Coach Biboy Ravanes as team consultant.

Last season, Wang’s compiled a 2-9 win-loss record. However, the team can take pride in alumni Michael Miranda, who went on to crack the PBA via Barako Bull this season.

Wang’s Basketball will debut on January 25 (Monday) against Phoenix Petroleum bannered by players from reigning UAAP champion Far Eastern University at the Ynares Sports Arena in Pasig City starting at 4:00 PM. The curtain raiser will feature Foundation Cup winner CafeFrance-CEU against the Mindanao Aguilas.

The Aspirants Cup will open on January 21 (Thursday) at the San Juan Arena with Tanduay Rhum and Caida Tiles meeting in the first game at 2:00 PM followed by the Banco de Oro-NU and QRS JAM Liner-UP tussle at 4:00 PM. AMA Online Education completes the nine-team field.
