San Beda, San Carlos to Final Four

There Can Only Be One     SAN JUAN City – Defending champion San Beda College advanced to the Final Four of the 2015 Philippine Collegiate Champions League (PCCL) by ending the Cinderella run of Technological Institute of the Philippines, 79-77, Tuesday (December 15) at the San Juan Arena. Later in the day, Cebu City’s University of San Carlos tripped University of Santo Tomas, 82-72, to join the Red Lions in the next round.

Leading by as much as 22 points, the Red Lions under Coach Jamike Jarin saw their lead evaporate in the midst of an intense rally by the Engineers. Still, time was not on the side of the Engineers who saw their four-game winning streak dating back to the qualifying rounds end.

Robert Bolick, a transfer from De La Salle University, and Donald Tankoua led San Beda with 13 points each and Tankoua grabbing 11 rebounds. Jemuel Namocatcat paced TIP with 17 points, seven rebounds and seven assists while Jorey Napoles backed him up with 15 points and seven rebounds.

Tuesday’s win sets up a titanic grudge match with the Colegio de San Juan de Letran Knights on Wednesday (December 16). The Knights ended the Red Lions’ five-year reign as NCAA champions last October but this time it will be assistant coach Napoleon Garcia who will call the shots in lieu of head coach Aldin Ayo who has transferred to DLSU.

The Warriors of Coach Bong Abad will play the UAAP champion Far Eastern University Tamaraws in the other Final Four fixture. The Tams of Coach Nash Racela are still fresh from their title romp two weeks ago.

Shooster Olago had a monster game of 19 points and 15 rebounds while William McAloney came off the bench for 11 points and six rebounds. Ed Daquioag topped the Tigers with 17 points followed by Kevin Ferrer and Kent Lao with 16 markers apiece.
