PCBL Semis For Caida, Euro-Med

2015 PCBL Founders Cup     QUEZON CITY – Caida Tiles and Euro-Med Laboratories completed their march to the semifinals of the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Founders Cup by disposing of their respective opponents in contrasting fashion Saturday (December 5) at the Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach Gym. The Tilemasters massacred Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU, 96-62, while Euro-Med needed overtime to halt Kama Motors, 85-78.

Euro-Med squandered a 12-point lead at the start of the fourth period but leaned on the heroics of Mar Villahermosa who forced the extension via a triple with 18 seconds left, 64-64. Three seconds earlier, Roider Cabrera gave Kama the lead for the last time via triple, 64-61.

In the extra period, Euro-Med finally got its long bombs working as Alvin Abundo and Samboy de Leon opened hostilities with back to back triples, 70-64. The hot shooting continued as de Leon and Paul Zamar chucked in two more triples and Jopher Custodio hit a pair of free throws to give Euro-Med an unassailable 82-72 cushion with 52 ticks remaining.

“We were very lucky today as that shot by Mar was big,” said a very relieved Coach Yong Garcia. “We just have to correct our tendency which we cannot do against Caida Tiles and I also look forward to coaching against my kumpare Coach Michael Buendia.”

Abundo topped Euro-Med with three triples for 18 points, seven rebounds and six assists. Villahermosa followed with 16 points while de Leon also had three triples for 14 points and eight rebounds.

Cabrera paced Kama with 20 point and eight rebounds. Michael Calisaan came off the bench for 11 points and six rebounds.

Caida took the easier path as they took advantage of the absence of Supremo Lex center Joseph Gabayni. With a big void in the Builders’ interior defense, the Tilemasters turned to starters Dexter Maiquez, Billy Ray Robles and Joseph Terso to easily take the first period, 28-21.

Supremo Lex did not help their cause by undergoing a big meltdown in the second canto as they could only produce nine markers. That signalled Caida’s breakaway by halftime, 46-30, and they coasted to the victory in the second half with Jamil Gabawan, Jordan Rios and Jan Jamon taking turns at leading the offense.

Interviewed after Euro-Med’s victory, Coach Buendia is looking forward to a good semifinal duel. “Euro-Med is very talented and we have to work extra hard because everything is now even in a best-of-three series even if we are the top seed,” said Coach Buendia.

Despite going scoreless in the fourth, Maiquez still paced Caida with 15 points and six rebounds. Jamon, Robles, Rios and Gabawan all submitted 10 points each to emphasize Caida’s balanced attack.

The last semifinal slot will be disputed by Santa Lucia Realty and the Cagayan Rising Suns in a winner take all affair. Game time is set for this Tuesday (December 8) at JCSGO starting at 5:00 PM.
