Caida Tiles End Slump, Return to Top

2015 PCBL Founders Cup   QUEZON CITY – Caida Tiles snapped their two-game losing skid by prevailing over Euro-Med Laboratories, 69-67, in a rare weekend game from the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Founders Cup last Saturday (November 14) at the Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach Gym. Breaking out of their slumber, the Malolos City-based Tilemasters also ended Euro-Med’s two-game winning streak while reclaiming the tournament’s solo leadership at 6-2.

After Samboy de Leon tied the game for the last time via at triple, 56-56, Caida countered with three unanswered baskets by Jamil Gabawan and Jiovani Jalalon to grab back the lead for good with four minutes to play, 60-56. Despite a spirited Euro-Med rally, Marvin Hayes and Billy Ray Robles sank timely field goals while Robles and Alex Almario delivered from the free throw line to preserve the victory.

Almario and Robles showed the way for Caida Tiles with 12 markers apiece. The win also allowed Caida to gain foothold for a twice-to-beat advantage in the opening round of the playoffs next month.

Mar Villahermosa continued his sizzling scoring pace with 17 points but it was not enough to salvage the game. Jopher Custodio backed him with 11 points.

In the curtain-raiser, Santa Lucia Realty notched its second win in a row by clobbering the Cagayan Rising Suns, 86-66. The convincing victory allowed the Realtors to pull ahead of the Rising Suns for solo third place with a 5-3 win-loss card.

The Realtors led all the way on the strength of an 8-0 opening run en route to an 18-7 first period. Wowie Escosio laid the foundation for the blowout with eight points in the period.

The bull-strong Escosio finished with 21 points to join two other teammates with 20 or more in recent acquisition Kent Salado with 23 and old reliable Mac Montilla with 20. Escosio also hauled a team-best six rebounds.

Nicole Bangga paced the Rising Suns with 19 points followed by Rocky Acidre with 10. The usually prolific CJ Isit was limited to only eight markers, a far cry from his 14.7 average entering the game.

The PCBL nears the homestretch with a doubleheader at JCSGO this Tuesday (November 17) with Jumbo Plastic meeting Kama Motors in the main game at 6:00 PM. The opener 4:00 PM will have the bottom two teams Foton Toplander and Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU trying to improve their playoff position.
