QUEZON CITY – The Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Giants scored their fourth straight win by repeating over the Cagayan Rising Suns, 102-89, at the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Founders Cup Tuesday (November 3) at the Jesus Christ Saves Global Outreach Gym. The Giants put on an amazing offensive display as they became the first team to surpass the 100-point mark in the three-week old tournament.
All Jumbo needed was James Martinez finding his range early, with his second triple giving the Giants the lead for good two and a half minutes into the contest, 10-8. The Rising Suns could not find a solution to the Giants’ torrid scoring pace as Jeff Alvin Viernes combined with Martinez in the second half with Jay-R Taganas establishing their biggest lead midway through the final canto, 92-74.
Viernes played a perfect shooting game as he converted all of his five field goal attempts and all 10 of his free throw attempts to finish with 21 points. Martinez added 11 more points in the third period to finish with a team-high 22 points.
“It’s all about motivating the players in our current winning streak,” said winning coach Stevenson Tiu. “All the teams in the PCBL are balanced talent-wise so the competition is very exciting.”
Jai Flores and Mark Brana paced the Rising Suns with 17 markers each. The Rising Suns dropped to 2-3 in the standings.
Ironically it was Viernes and Taganas, two players from nearby Isabela province that did the most damage to Cagayan’s cause. Taganas asserted himself underneath with 14 points and nine rebounds.
The Giants started their streak against the same Rising Suns, 88-75, last October 16. The only blemish on their record was their debut game against current league leader Caida Tiles, 82-94, last October 14.
In the main game, Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU finally landed into the win column by sending slumping Euro-Med Laboratories to their third straight loss, 80-79. The Builders of Coach Ralph Rivera lost their first four assignments by an average of 13.8 points before Tuesday’s breakthrough.
Firing blanks from the field all day, Bernabe Teodoro made up by sinking his only two albeit very important free throws off a foul from newcomer Paul Zamar with five seconds to that restored the lead to the Builders, 80-79. Before that, the Builders recovered possession after Joseph Gabayni split his free throws off a Jam Cortes foul by missing the second and the loose ball going out of bounds and the Builders trailing, 78-79.
Euro-Med had a chance to reverse the result but Gabayni broke up the play by swatting away the entry pass to the post. The ball though landed into the waiting hands of Cortes who launched an open jumper from the 15-foot line that missed and Gabayni sealed the deal by tapping the defensive rebound to safe territory.
It was truly a hard-earned win for the Builders as they quietly clawed back from a 19-point deficit in the third period, 35-54. Behind the 11 markers of Samboy de Leon, Euro-Med started strong by taking the first period, 28-14, and stretched it further by halftime, 47-30.
Gabayni combined well with fellow center Jason Escueta as the duo asserted their height and heft advantage over Euro-Med’s smaller frontline. Outside sniping from Christopher Bitoon and Joseph Marquez also complemented the big men’s game.
“I told the team before the game that I wanted to see some aggression and I’m glad they showed it,” said Coach Rivera. “They really deserve to win because I saw how hard they worked in our practices leading up to today.”
Playing in only his second PCBL game, Escueta showed his true worth by unloading 18 points, 12 coming in the third, on top of nine rebounds. Bitoon followed with 12 of his 16 points in the second half rally to go with six assists while Gabayni had a double-double of 13 points and 10 rebounds.
De Leon broke out of his slump by exploding for 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds but the good effort went to waste as the rest of the team struggled in the second half. Alvin Abundo backed him up with 11 points and seven assists.
Euro-Med got the better of Supremo Lex, 89-84, in their first meeting last October 16. They followed it up with an 81-70 thumping of Kama Motors last October 21 but have been winless since.
The next PCBL games on November 5 will have Santa Lucia Realty battling Jumbo Plastic at 4:00 PM followed by the 6:00 PM duel between Cagayan and Caida Tiles. Venue is still at the JCSGO Gym.
