SAN JUAN City – The Cagayan Rising Suns continued their ascent on the standings of the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Founders Cup by routing Euro-Med Laboratories, 89-78, at the San Juan Arena Wednesday (October 28). The result led to a four-way logjam at 2-2 for third to sixth place between Euro-Med, Cagayan and idle Santa Lucia Realty and Kama Motors.
Playing catch up for most the game, Euro-Med finally got to tie the count at 51-51 halfway through the third period. However, CJ Isit ignited a 19-5 windup to give the Rising Suns better cushion entering the final period, 70-56.
From there, the Rising Suns preserved the win through timely shots by Junar Arce, Stephen Siruma and Mark Brana and capped by a Jai Flores triple with less than minute to play that upped the lead to 13 markers anew, 89-76.
Nicole Bangga set the tone early by scoring 11 of his 13 first period points in a 16-0 that gave the Rising Suns an 18-9 advantage. Isit was also vital as he helped repel Euro-Med’s rallies in the second period, hitting 11 markers just before the halftime break.
Isit led all scorers with 25 points, four rebounds and three assists. Bangga added four more points to his first period explosion to tally 17 points and five rebounds.
Jam Cortes paced Euro-Med with 12 points and five rebounds. The trio of Alvin Abundo, Bong Galanza and Adrian Santos all chipped in 11 points each but it was not enough to prevent the team from dropping their second game in a row after a 2-0 start.
In the second game, the Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Giants cemented its grip on solo second place with a 91-69 demolition job on the winless Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU. The Giants stretched their winning streak to three games since dropping their opening assignment while the Builders are all alone at the bottom of the rankings at 0-4.
The Builders were only in the game in the first period. The Giants went on a 10-0 tear spanning the first and second periods to seize the lead for good, 23-15.
Jay-R Taganas and Jeff Alvin Viernes then took turns at dropping bombs on the Builders. Slowly but surely, the Giants saw themselves on top by 25 markers on a Mark Lopez triple with still five minutes to play in the final canto, 83-58.
Not even the presence of new players Jason Escueta and Bernabe Teodoro could perk up the Builders. The duo could only muster a combined six points.
Viernes and Taganas paced Jumbo Plastic with 16 points each and Taganas grabbing seven rebounds. Jaypee Belencion topped Supremo Lex with 14 points followed by Joseph Gabayni with 13 points and nine rebounds.
The PCBL will have its final games for the month on Friday (October 30) at the San Juan Arena. Undefeated Caida Tiles will play Foton Toplander at 4:00 PM followed by the main game at 6:00 PM between Kama and Santa Lucia.
