Jumbo Plastic Stuns Euro-Med, 79-65

PCBL     SAN JUAN City – The Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Giants banked on the amazing plays on both ends of the floor by Jay-R Taganas to take down erstwhile undefeated Euro-Med Laboratories, 79-65, at the resumption of the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Founders Cup at the San Juan Arena Friday (October 23). Both teams now tote similar 2-1 win-loss cards in a triple tie with idle Santa Lucia Realty.

Taganas and AJ Mandani combined for nine points in a crucial 11-0 run that gave the Giants their biggest lead of the game of 19 markers with still four minutes left in the first half, 34-15. Euro-Med slightly recovered in the third period by managing to cut their deficit to only four, 42-46, but timely baskets by Jeff Alvin Viernes and John Lopez gave Jumbo more breathing space entering the final period, 52-44.

Viernes then continued his hot streak and Taganas added another field goal to restore a 13-point edge with seven minutes to play. From there, the Giants matched Euro-Med’s shots, with Taganas capping his performance with back-to-back triples at the 10-second mark.

Taganas finished with a grand total of 20 points and 14 rebounds, both tournament highs, on top of three assists and three steals in 31 minutes of play. Viernes followed with 12 points while Lopez and Alvin Padilla chipped in 10 en route to their second straight victory.

Mar Villahermosa and Jam Cortes were the lone scorers in double figures for Euro-Med with 10 markers each. Bong Galanza and Dan Alberto came next with only nine points each.

In the first game, the Cagayan Rising Suns tallied their first win of the tournament and kept Supremo Lex Builders-OLFU winless, 92-70. Both squads entered the game mired in the cellar with two straight defeats.

Rising Suns team leader Junar Arce had difficulty getting his game going in the first half as he was checked well by Joseph Gabayni. However, the rest of the team stepped up as Jairold Flores hit a triple followed by a basket by Ralph Salcedo to give Cagayan the lead for good in the second period, 15-13.

It was an all-Cagayan show hence as they stretched their lead to as high as 24 points in the fourth period.74-50, on an Arce basket. The win allowed the Rising Suns to forget their bitter 94-97 overtime loss to Foton Toplander last October 21.

Bangga led the Rising Suns with 16 points. CJ Isit continued to impress in his second game with 15 markers.

Gabayni paced the Builders with 15 points and nine rebounds. Joseph Marquez backed him with 13 points and nine rebounds.

The PCBL Founders Cup will play two games on Monday (October 26) at the San Juan Arena. Foton tests Kama Motors at 4:00 PM followed by the main game between Santa Lucia and undefeated league leader Caida Tiles at 6:00 PM.
