SAN JUAN City – Jerald Bautista hit a miraculous midcourt three-point shot at the buzzer to lift Santa Lucia Realty over Foton Toplander, 79-76, in continuing action from the Pilipinas Commercial Basketball League (PCBL) Founders Cup Monday (October 19) at the San Juan Arena. The Realtors improved to 2-1 while Foton remained winless in two starts.
In the previous play, Allan Mangahas tied the game for the last time via a free throw split and four seconds to play, 76-76. Left without timeouts, the Realtors quickly put the ball in play, finding its way to Bautista for game-winner.
Mac Montilla and Ivan Camasura provided the key shots in the fourth period that allowed Santa Lucia to build a 75-68 lead entering the final two minutes. Levi Hernandez then rallied Foton by clustering six straight points, capped by a steal and a layup with 33 ticks on the clock, 75-76.
Montilla paced Santa Lucia with eight of his 18 points in the fourth period. Jett Vidal was next with 12 points.
Hernandez led all scorers with 22 points and five rebounds. Ed Rivera followed with 12 points and eight rebounds.
Lost in the din of Santa Lucia’s smashing victory was Caida Tile’s 94-60 crushing of sister team Kama Motors to pace the eight-team field with an immaculate 3-0 card. Kama levelled its record to 1-1 after winning over the Realtors in overtime, 99-92, on opening day last October 11.
A total of 10 of the 15 players fielded by Coach Michael Buendia contributed six or more points in a balanced attack. Leading the way were Dexter Maiquez and Ford Ruaya with 11 markers apiece.
All Caida needed was a quick 7-0 start and they never looked back. The best that Kama could do was cut the deficit but had difficulty cracking the three-point barrier.
Suddenly, the floodgates burst open in the second period as Maiquez, Ruaya and Jamil Gabawan took turns at stretching their lead that stood at 46-31 by the halftime break. It was the same story in the second half as Kama could not find a solution to Caida’s attacks, allowing the lead to balloon past the 30-point mark.
Rudy Lingganay led Kama with 19 points followed by Mark Montuano with 13 points and five rebounds, the only players in twin figures. Kama paraded a new coach in Ronjay Enrile after Jerry Ruiz left for Thailand for another coaching job.
Wednesday’s games will pit Kama Motors against undefeated Euro-Med at 4:00 PM followed by Foton testing Cagayan at 6:00 PM. Venue is still at the San Juan Arena.
