Red Lions Vent On Lyceum, 87-80

NCAA Season 91     SAN JUAN City – Defending champion San Beda College bounced back from a sorry loss to Perpetual Help last week to vent their frustrations on Lyceum of the Philippines University, 87-80, in continuing action from the 91st National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) at the San Juan Arena last Thursday (September 17).  Art de la Cruz again carried the champions with timely baskets in the final canto to fight off the Pirates’ repeated rallies.

The Pirates were in it only during the first period as they battled through four lead changes and two deadlocks.  De la Cruz shattered the game’s final deadlock with a free throw at the 2:27 mark of the first period, 12-11.

It was an all-San Beda show since as de la Cruz, Baser Amer and JV Mocon  took turns at puncturing the hole.  By halftime, the lead ballooned further, 67-58.

Suddenly, the Pirates came fighting back with Wilson Baltazar and Joseph Gabayni combining to form a lethal inside-outside combination.  Lyceum, with the duo at the helm, easily outscored the Red Lions in the succeeding three periods but the effort fell short.

Ranbill Tongco backed up de la Cruz with 14 points followed by Amer with 14.  Baltazar and Gabayni topped Lyceum’s offense with 28 and 24 points respectively but none of their other teammates could muster double digits.

San Beda thus managed to pull even with idle Letran College with similar 11-3 records.  Both aforementioned teams will meet again at the final day of the elimination round.

Meanwhile in the Juniors Division, the Red Cubs stayed perfect with their 14th straight win, a 90-79 trashing of Lyceum-Cavite.  While assured of a playoff spot, the Red Cubs can go for an 18-game sweep and an outright spot in the finals with a thrice to beat advantage.
