Junior Scorpions In Finals

NAASCU on Facebook    MANDALUYONG CITY – Centro Escolar University earned an automatic slot in the Juniors Division Finals after sweeping the elimination round of the 15th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities (NAASCU) last Friday (September 18) at the Rizal Technological University Gym.  The Junior Scorpions toppled defending champion Saint Clare College of Caloocan, 85-67, for their fifth win in as many games.

Tied at 54-54 after three periods, the Junior Scorpions took advantage of the Junior Saints’ major meltdown.  Rich Guinitaran outscored the entire opposition as he unloaded 16 against the Scorpions’ 13.

Guinitaran went on to lead all scorers with 23 points.  Allan Malubay followed with 22, nine made in the final period.

Saint Clare will now have to go through a stepladder playoff with Our Lady of Fatima University and RTU, which grabbed the last seat after frustrating New Era University, 65-60.  OLFU solidified its playoff spot by grounding the winless Philippine Christian University Baby Dolphins, 87-70.

Nicole Liquinan paced a balanced attack for RTU with 12 points.  Marino Haboc, John Grande and Mark Guting all added 10 points each for the Junior Thunder.

The Junior Phoenix (3-2) will play the Junior Thunder (2-3) in a knockout game at the start of the stepladder next Thursday (September 24) at the Makati Coliseum.  Saint Clare will play the survivor while enjoying the twice to beat advantage for the right to play the Junior Scorpions in a best-of-three series.

Meanwhile, the playoff picture in the Women’s Division became clearer as the penultimate games were completed.  With the rest of the team still in Zamboanga City, the six-player RTU Lady Thunder made short work of the NEU Huntresses, 72-27, while the Lady Phoenix clipped the Lady Saints, 58-56.

The Lady Thunder managed to pull even with idle defending champion CEU Lady Scorpions with their third straight win.  The two rivals will tangle for a spot in the championship series in the final elimination round game on September 24, the same day the Lady Phoenix (2-2) and Lady Saints (1-3) try to knock each other out in order to play the loser between CEU or RTU.
