The reigning back-to-back NAASCU champion Scorpions improved to 4-1 inflicted the first defeat on the many-time NCAA champion Red Lions who fell to 3-1 in Group B.

Well in control of the game since late in the first period, the Scorpions managed to fend off all of the Red Lions’ rallies with timely scores. NAASCU MVP Samboy de Leon put up another scoring display with 11 of his team-high 27 points in the second period to give CEU its biggest lead, 37-24.

San Beda leaned on Donald Tankoua to hold the fort against the raging plays of CEU’s Rodrigue Ebondo in an entertaining battle of exchange students. Compounding the Red Lions’ problems was the ejection of top center Ola Adeogun with 6:25 left in the game on two technical fouls for excessive complaining.

Jaypee Mendoza put San Beda at its closest, 65-70, and 1:43 to go. This was quickly neutralized by an Ebondo basket followed by a steal and breakaway layup for Alvin Abundo for a 74-65 CEU lead with less than a minute to play.

Shooting bricks all game, Art de la Cruz converted a late field goal but it proved to be San Beda’s final say as Ebondo settled the final count via the free throw line at the 31-second mark. A failed offensive returned the ball to the Scorpions who dribbled the remaining 20 seconds away.

“It was a good test of character for us on how to bounce back coming from a tough loss last time against UE,” said Coach Edgar Macaraya. The game somewhat also erased the bitter memories of last year’s tournament where the Scorpions lost by a single point to the Red Lions in the knockout semifinals, 62-63.

Ebondo backed up de Leon with 22 points and 14 rebounds. Also providing key numbers was Alfred Batino with eight points and five rebounds.

Tankoua topped San Beda with 16 points and nine rebounds. De la Cruz finished with 15 points, six rebounds and six assists but had to endure five out of 17 shooting from the field as the rest of the team groped for form.

In the other Group B encounter, the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates finally notched a win by toppling the University of the Philippines Maroons, 70-65. Over in Group A, National University Bulldogs routed Emilio Aguinaldo College Generals, 74-52, while Letran College Knights nipped Jose Rizal University Heavy Bombers, 58-52.

The Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eaglets returned to action in the Juniors Division via a 101-56 crushing of the Jose Rizal University Light Bombers. ADMU assumed the leadership of Group at 2-0, half a game ahead of idle De La Salle-Zobel (1-0).
