SAN JUAN City – Neighbors Centro Escolar University and San Beda College flattened their respective opponents to grab a share of the best record in the 2015 FilOil Flying V Hanes Premier Cup at the San Juan Arena Saturday (May 9). Both teams now tote an immaculate 3-0 win-loss record to join idle University of the East in a three-way logjam at the top of Group B.

Samboy de Leon set the tone early for the CEU Scorpions as they ran away from the Mapua Institute of Technology Cardinals, 90-76. The Red Lions through Art de la Cruz also had a similarly easy win over the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates, 75-56.

De Leon grabbed his second straight Freego Best Player of the Game award by firing 18 of his 24 points in the opening period, outscoring the entire Lyceum quintet by himself and pushing the Scorpions very much ahead, 31-16. He would later hit the last two of his six triples – a buzzer-beater just before halftime and a crucial one in the fourth period that quelled Mapua Tech’s final threat with seven minutes left, 72-64.

Centro Escolar also drew firepower all game long from Alfred Batino who had 17 points on top of 10 rebounds. Rod Ebondo followed with 13 points and seven rebounds.

The Scorpions had a lead of 15 markers late in the first canto, 28-13. While the Cardinals constantly tried to rally, hits by Batino and JM Vargas plus two free throws from Ebondo to get their biggest margin with 1:52 on the clock, 87-71.

Coach Edgar Macaraya blamed foul trouble that slowed down their torrid start and allowed the Cardinals to close in. “We hope to make the adjustments on defense because we will be facing tough teams next week in University of the East and De La Salle University,” said Coach Macaraya.

All the Red Lions needed was an eight-point outburst by de la Cruz that overturned a 3-2 Pirates lead in the first period, 10-3. It was all San Beda henceforth as the Pirates self-destructed by coughing up only seven points in the third period and the Red Lions on cruise control, 64-41.

De la Cruz earned another Freego Player of the Game award with19 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals. Ryusei Koga and Jayvee Mocon backed him up with 11 points each.

Joseph Gabayni and Wilson Baltazar were the only Pirates in double figures with 10 points each. Both teams were piloted by their assistant coaches in Joey Mendoza for San Beda and Jay Flores for Lyceum as head coaches Jamike Jarin and Topex Robinson were unavailable.

In the other Senior Division contest, Far Eastern University rose to 2-1 in dealing the University of San Jose-Recoletos their sixth defeat in seven games, 83-61, in Group A action. The lone Junior Division match saw debuting De La Salle-Zobel Junior Archers spanking the Letran Squires, 83-61, behind the 22 points of Aljun Melecio.
