RTU, CEU pace 14th NAASCU Volleyball

NAASCU on Facebook     MANDALUYONG CITY – Rizal Technological University remained the only undefeated side at the resumption of the 14th National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities. (NAASCU) Volleyball Tournament at the RTU Gym Tuesday (January 27). The host Lady Thunder exacted revenge on defending champions Centro Escolar University in three sets, 25-14, 26-24 and 25-17 in a rematch of last season’s Women’s Division Finals.

With their third win in as many matches, the Lady Thunder moved to within a game of sweeping the six-team elimination round and an automatic spot in the finals. The Lady Scorpions fell to 3-1 and remained in Second Place and good position to book a return engagement with RTU for the title.

In other matches completed, Saint Clare College of Caloocan got the better of Our Lady of Fatima University, 25-20, 25-20 and 25-10. The Lady Saints ended their schedule assured of Third Place at 3-2 while the Lady Phoenix dropped to Fourth Place at 2-2.

New Era University registered its first triumph and kept Philippine Christian University winless in a clash of the bottom two teams. The Huntresses survived three intense sets against the gritty Lady Dolphins, 27-25, 25-23 and 25-15.

All was not well for the hosts as the visiting Scorpions clobbered the defending champion Blue Thunder in a dramatic four-set Men’s Division skirmish, 18-25, 25-19, 25-16, and 27-25. The Scorpions, who finished in Third Place last year, remained the only unscathed team with three straight victories.

Last year’s runner-up New Era had an easy time against winless PCU, 25-4, 25-13 and 25-15. The Hunters now tote a 3-1 card for Second Place, half a game behind the Scorpions and half a game ahead of the Blue Thunder.

The day’s remaining match saw Saint Clare punish Our Lady of Fatima, 25-17, 24-26, 25-14 and 25-17. The Saints leveled their slate at 2-2 while the Phoenix fell to 1-3.
