Sharapova, Murray To Lead Manila Mavericks

g4V-FSnk_400x400     THE BIGGEST tennis event to hit the Philippines in recent memory, the International Premier Tennis League (IPTL), will be held from November 28 to 30 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City. Some of the biggest names in the game will arrive for the inaugural leg of the novel four-team competition.

Spearheading the “host” Manila Mavericks are Maria Sharapova and Andy Murray. They will be joined by Carlos Moya, Daniel Nestor, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Kirsten Flipkens and Filipino doubles specialist Treat Conrad Huey.

The Mavericks will defend their home turf against visiting teams Singapore Slammers, Micromax Indian Aces and the United Arab Emirates Royals. The player rosters of the visitors are no pushovers.

The Slammers count Serena Williams, Andre Agassi, Tomas Berdych, Lleyton Hewitt, Nick Kyrgios, Daniela Hantuchova, Bruno Soares and Patrick Rafter. The Aces have Roger Federer, Pete Sampras, Gael Monfils, Ana Ivanovic, Fabrice Santoro and local stars Sania Mirza and Rohan Bopanna.

Finally, the Royals will feature Novak Djokovic, Caroline Wozniacki, Goran Ivanisevic, Eugenie Bouchard, Marin Cilic, Nenad Zimonjic and Malek Jaziri. The ITPL will then play games in the home cities of the three other teams before declaring a champion by December 13.

Filipino tennis aficionados are expected to get their fix from 10 matches per day as the four teams will play a single round robin. Each tie will be composed of a Men’s and Women’s Singles, Men’s and Mixed Doubles and a Legends Singles.

Teams earn points for every win. Special rules have also been instituted to speed up the game thus making it easier to watch.
